Self Advocacy:  The Guardian Angels

Many of our programs focus on enabling people to get involved and, as much as possible, to do things for themselves. This includes advocating on their own behalf, for their own well-being.

Members meet twice a month to discuss topics of interest and to find ways to improve their lives and the lives of others with disabilities. Examples of such topics include voting rights, employment, housing, and personal relationships. The group has its own by-laws and officers are elected on a yearly basis.  The members also plan and participate in fundraisers to send members representing the group to national conferences, local conferences and workshops on self-advocacy.

It is also important to the Guardian Angels to give back to their community.  They run penny drives to donate to community organizations or other people in need.  They also do community service projects to help out in their communities as well.  The group clearly understands the importance and value of giving back and being part of their community and their role educating the community.

MARC's Guardian Angels are a chapter of People First of Connecticut, a statewide self-advocacy group for people with disabilities. The Guardian Angels are an effective advocacy group for positive change both in their own lives and in the lives of others.
