We became involved with MARC several years ago when we were approached to hire a team of consumers for cleaning/maintenance tasks for our Manchester location.  We were looking to start what I call a “Clean Team,” and we weren’t sure how to staff it effectively. We have a history of hiring consumers with varying degrees of ability; it has always been important to us to be able to offer opportunity to all individuals that want to work-and our experiences have been positive and inspirational.  We did not know at the time how much the MARC consumers would change our lives and change how we approach our recruitment methods and our standards of service.

 

We now understand that not only do they have outstanding ability, they warm the hearts and souls of everyone they meet on a daily basis. We have since added their teams to our other location.  And we have added our own associates to the clean team, and modeled their responsibilities after our MARC consumers.

 

As we all know, in business and particularly in retail we face challenges with regard to the workforce and their work ethic. The MARC consumers are serious about their tasks, but never too serious to offer a smile to a customer or an associate. The combined factor of their energy and willingness to be there and their coach’s ability to focus their efforts properly make for a winning process overall.  I would also like to note the fact that if we have any issues at all, a coach is immediately available to address any concerns.  The MARC staff has been warm, responsive, gracious and kind. Really, the ultimate vendor to work with!

 

MARC consumers are walking billboards for why companies should commit to workforce development and opportunities for on the job training. I’ve often heard the argument about how noble it is to offer work experience to individuals with varying abilities-but we find it to be much more than that. They’ve done so much more for our organization than we have for them. Everyone has the right to work. Every individual has something to contribute to an organization. If there were ample opportunities in our communities, we would have more people actively fulfilling their dreams and positively impacting their place of work, and community at large.

 

In a world of efficiencies and “go go go” and “how many meetings can I fit into one day” they remind me to stop and take my time, even just for a moment.  They remind me not to make excuses or take too many shortcuts in life, because waking up each day with purpose is enough.
